Need a little brush up for the certification exam? Get ready by attending the new Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery (MDS) Subspecialty Certification Exam Prep Course during the AAD Summer Meeting. The session, which takes place 9 am-4 pm, Thursday, Aug. 5, is question-and-answer-based and will review high-yield topics likely to be on the exam. To encourage active participation, attendees will use an audience response system.

“The course will give attendees the opportunity to learn from experts from around the country about up-to-date topics relevant to dermatologic oncology and Mohs micrographic surgery,” said session director Addison Demer, MD, FAAD, a Mohs micrographic surgeon, dermatologic oncologist, and assistant professor at Mayo Clinic, who will lead the course.

“The course will also review important topics that are less commonly reviewed at a typical dermatology/Mohs conference," he said.

Attendees can also expect to cover a wide variety of topics and receive a review of those subjects that are likely to be represented on the MDS exam, Dr. Demer said.

“These topics include perioperative management, staging and management of BCC, SCC, melanoma, Merkel cell carcinoma and other rare tumors, dermoscopy, medical practice and regulatory considerations, Mohs lab setup, wound healing, cutaneous reconstruction, genetic syndromes and basic science, billing/coding, Mohs pathology of common and rare tumors, radiation therapy, targeted treatments, immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and systemic drug management.”

Following this day-long prep course, attendees will be able to outline major dermatologic surgery concepts, such as flap design, tumor staging, and the appropriate workup for high-risk tumors. They will also recognize and be prepared to answer questions that are likely to appear on the MDS board examination.

The American Board of Dermatology plans to administer the first MDS Subspecialty Certification Examination on Oct. 4, 2021, at Pearson VUE test centers nationwide.
