Derm Tank competition returns to 2023 Innovation Academy.
D001 – Derm Tank

Dermatologists are winding up for the pitch as they anticipate the return of this afternoon's “D001 – Derm Tank” at 2023 Innovation Academy. Modeled after the popular TV show Shark Tank, this dermatology-inspired version will pair three finalists with judges to determine the commercial potential of new dermatology-related ideas. This could include a new technique, device, product, or instrument.
The session’s co-directors are Brett M. Coldiron, MD, FAAD, a Cincinnati, Ohio dermatologist, Daniel M. Siegel, MD, MS, FAAD, clinical professor of dermatology at State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate, and Cheryl M. Burgess, MD, FAAD, a Washington, D.C., dermatologist. In addition to commercial viability, Derm Tank pitches and their presenters will be scored for innovation. The highest-rated presenter will receive a “seed” money honorarium.
“It’s about building a better mousetrap. We all can recognize a better method or delivery system in medicine; therefore, conceptualizing, creating, and cultivating your idea is the essential aspect to starting the process,” Dr. Burgess said.
Each presentation will include a time for questions and answers with the judges. Attendees will gain knowledge of innovative technology and how to apply it, tips for improving the dermatology practice, and new skills in improving diagnoses.
“We have the best and brightest in our specialty,” Dr. Siegel remarked. “It would be wonderful to see something we support enrich the lives of our colleagues and our patients.”
Derm Tank contestants include Arlene M. Ruiz de Luzuriaga, MD, FAAD, Maria Gnarra Buethe, MD, PhD, Jonhan Ho, and Maryam Safaee, MD, FAAD.
