This year’s Innovation Academy meeting will showcase exciting discussions and debates, including P007 – Showdowns in Pediatric Dermatology: Current Controversies from the Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance. The format of the anticipated session will place presenters head-to-head debating controversial topics that impact the specialty.
Co-session directors Dawn Z. Eichenfield, MD, PhD, FAAD, and Maria Gnarra Buethe, MD, PhD, FAAD, helped identify three top issues, which experts from the Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance (PeDRA) will tackle.
1. Early laser therapy intervention for infantile hemangiomas: Denise Metry, MD, FAAD, and Joyce Teng, MD, FAAD
2. Food allergies and eczema: Abigail Lang, MD, and Elizabeth Lippner, MD
3. Early systemic treatment for atopic dermatitis (AD): Peter Lio, MD, FAAD, and Robert Sidbury, MD, MPH, FAAD
“PeDRA plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of pediatric dermatology through high-impact, collaborative research that directly addresses the most pressing and complex concerns facing our patients and our field,” said Dr. Eichenfield, who is assistant professor of dermatology and pediatric dermatology education director at UC San Diego School of Medicine and Rady Children’s Hospital. “In short, PeDRA helps dermatologists see further, think deeper, and care better.”

“Each of these debates addresses a real-time clinical dilemma that pediatric dermatologists face in practice. The session is designed to challenge assumptions, present emerging evidence, and highlight differing philosophies of care — making it both cutting-edge and essential for clinicians navigating a rapidly evolving landscape,” said Dr. Buethe, who is director of pediatric dermatology at the University of California, Irvine, and dermatology division chief at Children’s Hospital of Orange County.
Drs. Eichenfield and Buethe said attendees who are navigating the rapidly evolving pediatric dermatology landscape should leave the great debate with a deeper awareness of and appreciation for these important areas.
