There’s Something in the Water: AVÈNE's Signature Microbiota Extracts in Dermatological Practice

Presented by Eau Thermale Avène

This collection of articles is dedicated to an ancient therapy, still in force in many places all over the world, its applications in dermatology and, most of all, its metamorphosis by way of modern technology into a series of advanced ingredients of biological origin, namely, postbiotics stemming from thermal spring water.

The cutaneous effects of hydrotherapy were a challenge to researchers, who explored for several decades the mineral ingredients. With the knowledge about the microbiota accumulating in the 2000s, unique bacteria were identified in the Avène-les-Bains source of thermal water in France. It appeared that not only is the mineral composition highly specific to the source, but also the microorganisms populating the isolated underground environment are, at least in part, endemic to the site. The first specific and previously unknown bacterium to be identified and cultivated was named Aquaphilus Dolomiae.
